Temporary Graduate Visa
The Temporary Graduate Visa (subclass 485) allows international students who have recently graduated from an Australian institution to live, study, and work in Australia temporarily. To make the application process easier, a range of services are available to assist applicants.
What is a Temporary Graduate Visa (subclass 485)?
The Temporary Graduate Visa (subclass 485) allows international graduates to gain practical work experience,
stay longer in Australia, and potentially work towards permanent residency.
Streams

Graduate Work Stream
- For: International students who have recently graduated with skills and qualifications that relate to an occupation on Australia’s Skilled Occupation List (SOL).
- Stay duration: Usually up to 18 months (or up to 24 months for Hong Kong and British National Overseas passport holders).
- Requirements:
- Completed a qualification relevant to an eligible skilled occupation.
- Studied for at least 2 academic years (92 weeks) in Australia.
- Held a student visa in the last 6 months before applying.
- Skills assessment in the nominated occupation may be required.

Post-Study Work Stream
- For: Students who have completed a higher education degree (Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctorate) from an Australian institution, regardless of field of study.
- Stay duration:
- Bachelor’s degree: 2 years
- Master’s (coursework or research): 3 years
- Doctoral degree: 4 years
- Graduates from regional areas may be eligible for 1–2 years extra stay.
- Requirements:
- First student visa must have been obtained on or after 5 November 2011.
- Must meet the Australian Study Requirement (2 academic years).
- Must apply within 6 months of completing your course.

Replacement Stream
- For: Current or former Temporary Graduate visa holders who lost time due to COVID-19 travel restrictions.
- Stay duration: Same as the original visa period that was lost.
Work Rights
- You can work full-time and study during your stay.
- No restrictions on work hours or type of employment.
